It is with deep sorrow that we learnt yesterday of the untimely passing of inspiring young woodworker William Bayliss, who tragically lost his life at 26 years old in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, 10th November.

William was not only a brilliant craftsman but also one of the most respected and admired woodworkers of his generation. His quiet brilliance, dedication, and immense talent have left an indelible mark on the woodworking community both in Australia and internationally.

William had become a regular and cherished part of the Maleny Wood Expo community, known not only for his remarkable talent but also for his quiet demeanour, extensive knowledge, and kind, approachable nature. He had a passion for the natural world, which often influenced the design of his work.

A valued apprentice, employee, friend, and colleague to those at Dunstone Design, he touched the lives of everyone he worked with.

In 2015, William became an apprentice at Dunstone Designs, where at 16 years old, he left school to pursue his dream of becoming a world class craftsman, which he well and truly achieved.

William’s list of awards, recognition and achievements nationally and internationally is extensive, and admirable.

Notably, in 2019, William won the prestigious Sunshine Coast Wootha major prize for his exquisitely crafted Torrent Audio Cabinet, becoming the youngest maker ever to receive the honour.

He then went on to receive a scholarship to study at the New Zealand Center for Fine Woodworking for 6 weeks under Canadian mastercraftsman Michael Fortune which further expanded his creative horizons.

In 2021 William was awarded Australian Wood Reviews Maker of the Year with his pair of Bunyjul Occasional Tables.

As part of the judging panel in 2023, his expertise and insight left a lasting impression on his peers.

This year, he further showcased his exceptional skills, winning the furniture category with a beautifully crafted Mundi Mundi Entrance Table.

From the Barung Landcare, Maleny Wood Expo and the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize team our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to William’s family, friends, and colleagues during this deeply tragic time.

His life was far too short, and he will be deeply missed but not be forgotten by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
